In 2021, a few of us recognized the urgent need to increase voter participation in our democracy in a non-partisan way, especially among those who were unregistered. Too many people were disengaging, throwing up their hands, and choosing not to register or vote.

We were struck by the high number of eligible but unregistered voters in North Carolina, as well as the hundreds of new residents moving to our state every week. Democracy, in our opinion, was running on a low battery. It needed new energy, fresh ideas, and innovative approaches. Determined to make a difference, we took action.

That’s why we founded the North Carolina Voter Project, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to getting new voters registered and ensuring their voices are heard. But we also wanted to do more—to make the registration process more efficient, accessible, and cost-effective.

Significant time, effort, and resources have already been devoted to increasing voter participation, but something was still missing. We believed a fresh approach could make a real difference. So, we invested our own money, reached out to friends and colleagues for support, and secured the top election law firm in North Carolina for guidance. From there, we incorporated, hired an executive director and staff, and set out on our.The journey has been eye-opening, exhilarating and, at times, exhausting—but every challenge only strengthened our resolve. Today, thanks to the dedication of our team and community, the NCVP has come a long way. Every day, we work diligently and strategically to ensure more voices are heard at the ballot box.

And we’re just getting started. Join us in powering up democracy.
